I recommend this for indie writers. There is good solid laws on what you need to do be successful as a writer. The info on emails is different from other stuff I've read. Overall for 99 cents recommended.
A very useful book on self publishing. I have read big portion of the information on blogs and writing websites, but this is a good summary. If you don't want to spend days to gather all these from all around the web, this book is worth the money. It is up to date, referring to the latest articles.
Bell is a writer of both fiction and non-fiction. As such he is qualified to instruct our coach spring authors. The best of his five unbreakable laws: "write good books." Yes, there is other excellent information in the book, but it all depends on rule #2, write well. And just behind that in importance is rule #5, "don't quit."
Clear, practical, and even entertaining survey of self-publishing: what to do and how to do it, plus reassurance and encouragement. Highly recommended.
Specific, helpful advice that's encouraging, daring you to dive in, share your gifts, without fear. Top notch, as always, and worth rereading regularly
This is essential for anyone interested in self-publishing. And, actually selling a book or two in the process.
For starters, there is the interesting information that Barry Eisler turned down a $500,000, two-book contract from a publishing company to go completely independent.
He then notes that self-publishing is a way of getting more product out, fast, and getting paid directly for it. The "fast" aspect is already enough for me. I have dealt with publishers, and whatever their merit or lack thereof, having them in the process slows things down. That's not what I want as an author. I want my stuff out immediately, whenever I want.
But the part of getting paid also has some appeal for most people. And Bell goes on to explain that it has never been a better time to be an author not yet famous. The walls are gone. Everyone can play.
The second part of the book lays out "five laws" for success.
Most of that is interesting, but it not necessarily restricted to self-publishing. There is a lot of advice in there that applies to writing in general.
This is a book that I highly recommend to Indie authors. Mr. Bell lays down the law for being a self-published writer, and I would add that his advice should be heeded. (Even if he has written Zombie Attorney books! for which I forgive him.)
It is a short work and I often refer to it for know-how and to keep me and my writing business on the straight and narrow. If you are serious about writing, and want to publish on Kindle or another Indie route, you have to read this book.
I did find a few formatting mistakes, the odd broken paragraph or misplaced indention, but hey, being an Indie writer who once published a Kindle book with vertical text, those mistakes warmed my heart to know that even the big boy authors (I won't mention the Zombie Lawyer again) make blunders.
All poking-the-author aside, I say: buy this book, study it and learn. Good job Mr. Bell. This title is well worth the time and money. KRH
While I was disappointed much of the text here is borrowed from some of his other books there is enough original content here to justify the meager price tag. He also does a good job of updating readers on what he's learned in the past years. Many of the lessons seemed invaluable, and I was happy to not be working with dated information anymore.
It must be said too that James Scott Bell writes so clearly and logically about writing as a business that I didn't mind rereading some of the text. It felt as if I was reviewing my notes from a master class.
I feel much more prepared for my scheduled foray into self-publishing and I have James Scott Bell's work to largely thank for that. Well worth the cost. I'm really looking forward to reading more by him.
This book is one of my inspirational reads of the year. I didn't realize when I bought it a year ago how much I was going to need it. There is plenty in this book for the novice self-publisher to learn from—sage advice for them if they choose to heed it. Rules two and five are my favorites: Be a good writer and keep writing. Do you need any better advice? Oh, you need specifics? This book doesn't just cover the whats, but the hows and the whys of self-publishing. In fact, I know many traditionally published authors who could use Bell's pointers on self-promotion. I will be returning to this book again and again over the next few years.
I have a decided interest in publishing from the publisher's perspective, so it is interesting to see what the self-publishing crowd is doing. The book doesn't provide a lot of great advice, mostly common sense stuff like set goals and make them specific, but I found it ironic that the advice to self-publish was to make yourself a publisher.
If Bell is right, then there is still hope for the publishers in the world.
This is the third self publishing book I've read in as many days, and the message in this one is the same as the others. That's not a bad thing -- at least folks who believe in self publishing are all on the same page. So, I'll give this guide four stars because it really is a helpful read. The author's personal stories about his process and his successes make the book particularly appealing.
An informative primer for any author who's head is spinning from the ebook revolution and needs some concrete advice for how to take advantage of this landmark time in history. Bell's book is easy to understand, straightforward, and encouraging. Mostly aimed for those wanting to epublish, it does include some insights for self publishing in print form too. I'll be reading it again!
This is a great guide book for navigating a self-publishing career. You may have heard some of the advice before, but it's all useful. The best part is, in classic Bell style, you will feel encouraged to keep going in your career. (Bell is one of the most encouraging "how to write" authors I've read.)
This is a great book for any writer at any stage of his or her career. The section on marketing, particularly newsletters, is worth the price of the book. Another bonus is that it's a short, easy read--I read it in one sitting. The faster I can finish a book (and get a lot out of it in the process) the faster I can get back to writing. Highly recommended.
James Scott Bell knows how to go on the attack in publishing and he has shared his strategy with the rest of us. He gives us the answers we need to be the best writers and published authors we can be. Anyone who wants to publish their work needs to read this book.
James Scott Bell is the gift that keeps giving. Don't let the length of this book fool you -- it is full of powerful ideas, well thought out insight, and actionable steps to help the writer that's considering taking the plunge. Highly recommended.
I thought it was pretty good and it definitely gave me some food for thought. I was happy to see that in most ways I was following this advice. I was troubled that I seem to be selling less than others he describes even if I am doing this stuff. Worth a read for self publishers, though.
I can always count on James Scott Bell to inform--and entertain! A great broadstroke for those considering self/e-pub--loaded with general teachings, specific pointers, and possibly most importantly, encouragement for his fellow writers.
This book contained many helpful things and expanded my knowledge of the self publishing process. As a self published and internationally selling author, I am always seeking to further educate myself in the intricacies of my craft. Very helpful!
Bell can be counted on to tell it like it is. This is a great handbook for anyone considering the leap into self-publishing. Keep it on the shelf (or your Kindle) to reference as you get started. These are the fundamentals, and the fundamentals win the ball game.
If you are a self published writer, take a few minutes to read this book. It will either confirm what your doing is right, give you additional ideas, or tell you how to get more eyes on your work.
I liked the fact this Author was being honest and wanted to help others. I gave it five stars because it helped me and I will re-read it to help me be the best that I can be at my craft.
Outstanding book about the orocess of self-publishing. Cleared up a lot of questions for me. I love the focus on self-publishing as a business enterprise. Book provides excellent guidance, both don'ts as well as dos, always an asset, about ebook publishing choices.
James Scott bell always delivers. He gives 5 unbreakable laws for writers to follow in seeking publication. I like the last one:"You must repeat over and over for the rest of your life." You're in the game to play; play the game.
... and this book does that! He encourages. Is funny. Swings the 2x4. As a result, I made a list of goals for the rest of 2016. Also, mapped out marketing steps as I prepare to release book 2 in my series. Thank you James Scott Bell!
Wonderful guide for anyone considering self publishing. Whether you are new to writing or a veteran "Traditionally" published author, this book offers great advice and examples.
