Set during the Panchayat regime, it is the story of a Newar girl of Kathmandu Indramaya (Garima Panta), who falls in love with Pitambar (Dhruba Dutta), from a Brahmin family. Though inter-caste marriage was not socially and culturally acceptable then, the duo get married. Also a political activist, Pitambar is then jailed for going against the Panchayat System and the king.
Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala (Nepali: विश्वेश्वरप्रसाद कोइराला) was born in Varanasi to father Krishna Prasad Koirala, was one of the greatest Nepali political and literary figure. He was the Prime Minister of Nepal from 1959 to 1960 and also the first democratically elected Prime Minister in Nepal's history. He held the office just 18 months before being deposed and imprisoned by order of King Mahendra. The rest of his life was spent largely in prison or exile and in steadily deteriorating health.
While Koirala is considered one of the most charismatic political leader of Nepal, he was also one of the most well-read and thoughtful writers of Nepalese literature. He wrote short stories and novels, and some poems. Koirala began writing short stories in Hindi. His first stories were published in Banaras in Hansa, a Hindi literary magazine edited by Prem Chand (India's Tolstoy). His first Nepali short story "Chandrabadan" was published in Sharada (a Nepali literary magazine) in 1935. Koirala was very good at depicting the character and mind of women. Four other stories of Koirala were included in Katha Kusum (an anthology of Nepali stories), published in 1938 in Darjeeling. As a social realist, with good psychological insight, Koirala had established himself as one of the most important Nepali short story writers of Nepal.
I am so happy that there is a book in Nepali that has portrayed such a confident, courageous and rebellious female character. I am thankful to B.P. Koirala for such a modern portrayal. And when I think of the time when this book was written, probably some 70 years ago, I am at awe!
After almost three years, I read a few Nepali novels, all of BP Koirala, this month thanks to data cleansing and processing tasks at my company. Frankly, I could have skipped most of the paragraphs of the novel as per the technical necessity but the story was so intriguing that I couldn't help myself complete the novels.
My conclusion: BP Koirala is an exquisite writer who pens down the thoughts on human love and sexuality like no others. I cannot even recall a foreign 'renowned' writer who has crafted stories the way he has done. His philosophy is way ahead of our time and I wonder what ripples these stories must have created when he first published them years ago.
Teen Ghumti is a beautiful story of a woman, whose life is summed up by the three decisions she took, against her family, husband, and society, to live life the way she wanted. The story revolves around the meaning of love and sexuality in a human's life, the boundaries that our society has created to understand those emotions. Sex is still considered a topic not many can discuss freely in our society but IndraMaya, a married woman, knows that sex is simply a biological need and it doesn't have strings attached to morality or norms of the society we live in. She is a rebel who knows the importance of love and futility of caste and creed and also submits to the pleasure sought by her body, after all, both are as natural as our life.
It is a story of a woman, who knows the distinction between love and sex but also understands the necessity of those in life.

'Tin Ghumti' primarily portrays three unconventional choices made by the protagonist in her life, which are not commonly accepted in a patriarchal society where male dominance prevails. The novel depicts how some relationships fade away over time due to differing perceptions of the partners involved. The protagonist holds onto hope that her husband will fulfill her expectations and make their marriage a success, but their relationship is portrayed as somewhat ambiguous. Despite facing societal dogmas that have oppressed Nepalese women, the protagonist exhibits admirable courage in standing up to them.
Writing is phenomenal. Landmark piece for Nepali literature. However most portion of the novel is written as a monologue. Talking about characters even though the lady is cheered on by most readers I felt all three characters were flawed. And it is upto us readers how to deconstruct them. The lady yes strong but selfish, considers only her emotions. And yes the story is quite woke even for 2024. The writer is successful in giving the readers sth to brainstorm on.
This book has three turns from love ,lust and sacrifice. This book change your perception and belief that you belive till before reading this book if you finished this you’re no longer the past one. There are less around 7-10 characters but everyone has their solid part. If someone can write in nepal at that level the person is BP.
I think the purpose of these type of books were to bring positive change in the society. You can find this book similar to Buwa ama ra Chora . Even though their context is different , you will have same feelings after reading this.
Teen Ghumti is a novel written by B.P Koirala which depicted the three stages of Indramaya life where she is portrayed as a rebellious and courageous woman who fights in different stages of her life, taking brave decisions that changes the way her life works.
Indramaya is the character way ahead of the time the character was written in. Even in today’s social atmosphere a lot of people won’t be able to get her psychology. Her relationships and decisions are beyond social norms. She is bold enough to put her points and walk away when needed.
B.P. Koirala was a truly great man: a great statesman and writer. I can think of hardly anyone else who could go as deep into the psyche of characters as B.P could. I loved the book!
The book I would recommend everyone to read. A courageous female characters with a revolutionary thoughts and deeds. At the end everyone would think at least for once about sex and love.
Love how a female explores her life in multitudes of ways through the character :) Koirala at least have makes us happy by making his woman characters so strong✨
Koirala beautifully ends the story and leaves the readers to conclude the ending. In my opinion, there are two approaches to interpreting i.e. sentimental/ feminism or realism.
