REVIEW: I want you call an ultimate comic book nerd, some people see me and think no way! But yes I’m a dedicated comic collector along with my dad. So when it comes to books and superheroes I know what I liked and when it comes to super powers they’ve got to be cool! Reality Stinks by Ashlynn Monroe was just so much fun and had some hot romance scenes!
Dina was the best of the best of reality television, well she use to be… After a year of flops she’s about to get her last chance in creating a hit or she will be out of a job. Luckily she has connections with a superhero, yes a real life superhero. Mind-Man aka Zane has extraordinary powers and works with others to fight crime in their city. The love of his life wanted normalcy and left him behind for her career, until she needed him to help save her career. Dina needed Zane to star in her new show “I want to date a superhero,” regretfully he agrees.
I loved the story, I was laughing and biting my nails as I read through this. The relationship between Dina and Zane was so much fun to read about as it developed and I enjoyed reading about their pasts. Of course the super powers and villains were all there and I really felt like I was reading a comic book. I was sucked into the story and got really attached to the characters.
Dina and Zane come from a horrible past along with a couple of others who were experimented on. Her character reminded me a lot of Lois Lane and how tough and determined she was. As Zane didn’t have Superman’s power but he had some really awesome abilities. All the secondary characters I loved, even the villains. Monroe really knows how to pull her readers into her story.
I’m really hoping for a second book because I’m dying to know more about the mysterious Caspian. I recommend this to readers who enjoy action, superheroes, romance and a fun and fast paced story.
RECOMMENDATION: This is an adult novel with sexual content and a bit of violence. Fans of Jennifer Estep’s Elemental Assassin series and Chloe Neill’s Chicagoland Vampire series will love this!
Deena works for a television network and is in danger of losing her job. Desperate to save it, she comes up with I want to date a superhero. Unfortunately for her, the only superhero she knows is the only man she’s ever loved. Zane Blair agrees but only for Deena. One reluctant bachelor, plus ten attention seeking women and one very evil super villain equals some seriously funny reality TV!
Let me say here and now that this book is for the 18 and up crowd. However, do NOT let the $5.99 price tag sway you from buying this book! It’s awesome fun! I could not put it down! It was really unlike anything I’ve ever read. If this was reality TV, maybe we wouldn’t be so angry with that genre of entertainment. What doesn’t this book have? Superheroes, zombies and comedy galore! You will be waiting anxiously for the sequel just like I am.
Thanks to Ashlynn Monroe for the review copy of this book. It in no way influenced my review.
I absolutely enjoyed reading “Reality Stinks” By Ashlynn Monroe. It’s a page turning, exciting romance. This is a definite must read for all urban fantasy lovers!
Dina is familiar with life around superheroes. After all, her sister and the boy she’s always loved are two of a group of people with extraordinary powers, brought on by less than noble beginnings. Victims of evil experiments as children, they use their powers for good. Well, most of them do. Dina, the ordinary one of the orphans turned supermen and superwomen, clings to her ordinary life and tries to keep herself separate from the lives of the supers she knows. Until her job is at stake.
Then, in a fit of desperation, she reaches out to that boy I mentioned previously. Zane, aka Mind-Man. She conceives a reality television show called I Want To Date A Superhero and begs her friend to be the star. Zane, still in love with Dina, reluctantly gives in.
Reality Stinks is a cute foray into our own reality: an entertainment world over-saturated with shows that follow people, famous and infamous, so we can see how they eat their cheeseburgers and fight with their managers. At least, in this story, the subject is a likable guy with a nice dose of nobility about him.
The contestants on Dina’s show are amusing, and reminiscent of many dolts you see parading themselves across the screen to supposedly win the affections of a stranger. And, of course, there’s a bad guy, who is just the right catalyst for getting stubborn Dina to open her eyes and see that Mind-Man is the man for her.
An enjoyable twist on reality television. If only 'real' reality shows had such an angle to exploit....

Reality Stinks is a story with an interesting premise which doesn’t quite come together. When I joined the BLB tour for this book, I don’t think my brain really processed that the superhero mentioned was an actual superhero (brain fail) so when I started reading and then met a literal superhero, I was a bit surprised. After getting over this rather random change of events the story carried on at a pleasant pace. I found the overall plot to be cheesy (in a good way) and fun but the good definitely did not outweigh the bad.
What really brought this book down was the writing. The humor often fell flat, the latter half of the story seemed rushed and there were numerous grammatical and spelling typos. The thing that most poked my inner English teacher were the changing tenses in conversations and dialogue. I had to stop a couple of times and reevaluate the scene and this definitely didn’t add to my overall enjoyment. While being rushed to wrap up all of the loose ends, the second half also seemed dragged out. Just as the end was in sight, a new twist was introduced. By this point I was tired of the story and tired of the characters. Because of my confusion and annoyance, I never really connected with our protagonists and by the end, the premise of a superhero reality dating show was falling apart in my mind.
I have seen a couple of other books by this author around so I might try again, but for now I’m going to have to state that this wasn’t my thing.
This book was far different than I have read recently. The premise had me intrigued and I was eager to read this book and considering all the reality show's (some I admit I do watch on a regular basis) I thought this book fit right in for whats all on TV today.
The basic story-line was good, I really enjoyed the beginning with Dina and her boss as well as with her picking the contestants and her reactions and thoughts about each girl but there are just a couple things that I wish could had more of like more in depth with Zane, I for some reason couldn't connect with him as well as with Dina. Other thing was I felt the middle towards the end was a bit rushed.
But that being said it was an enjoyable read. If you are looking for something different give this book a try.
This was an interesting read! I really enjoyed the concept. The characters were well developed, and their relationships were well illustrated throughout the book, especially between the two main characters. It's very obvious as you're reading how familiar they are to each other. Things like, "...her hair didn't feel as soft as he remembered..." particularly serve to illustrate the level of devotion.
All in all, an excellent read! I look forward to the next installment.
