Stars of Mithra #1-3

Stars of Mithra Box Set: Captive Star / Hidden Star / Secret Star

Rate this book
From #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts comes The Stars of Mithra trilogy, a collection of classic stories about three strong heroines and the three priceless gems that are destined to change their lives--and their hearts--forever.

Diamonds can be a girl's best friend...or her worst enemy.

Hidden Star
She couldn't remember a thing, not even who she was. But it was clear Bailey James was in trouble. Big trouble. And she desperately needed private eye Cade Parris to help her find out just what kind. Surely she wasn't a criminal--but then what on earth was she doing with a bag full of cash and a stunning blue diamond as big as a baby's fist?

Captive Star
Someone had set them both up. Now, handcuffed together, bounty hunter Jack Dakota and bail jumper M. J. O'Leary were on the run from a pair of hired killers. And M.J. wasn't talking--not even when Jack found a gigantic blue diamond hidden in her purse. Everything told Jack the sexy skip he'd been hired to recover couldn't be trusted...everything, that is, but his heart.

Secret Star
He was standing face-to-face with a woman he'd believed to be dead...and she was holding a gun. Lieutenant Seth Buchanan's homicide investigation was thrown into turmoil when Grace Fontaine turned up very much alive--and in possession of one of the huge blue diamonds known as the Stars of Mithra. Seth had always made a point of not letting his personal feelings affect his work...but he was beginning to recognize that no mystery could ever be as compelling as Grace herself.

Enjoyable, fun read, Nora's style.
The kind of book you want to read while feeling down, or when you're on vacation, or when it's a bad weather and all you want to do is snuggle up on the couch and read while drinking hot cocoa and watching rain drops.

Characters were, mostly, relatable. Three very different women who are, in the same time, the very best of friends, find themselves separated and in danger because they're in the possession of Three Stars of Mithra, the mythical diamonds, that are believed to give power and immortality to the one who possess them all.
That's when the "adventure" starts. Love on first sight, journey of finding yourself, a story of love that can defeat all the obstacles, good vs evil.
Classical Nora.
The writing is good, overall and keeps you interested, enough to want to finish it in one sitting.
It's just too predictable, she never gets out of her comfort zone.
Hence, 3.5 stars.

I go to Nora Roberts as true escapism -- complete brain candy when the only energy I have is to sit and read all day. While I do dislike how macho some of the characters are a quick distraction from the real world.

Hidden Star
This is the first book in the Stars of Mithra trilogy.

Bailey woke up in an ugly hotel room with a million in cash, a pistol and a blue diamond in a bag. She also has no memory. Not of herself, her life nor how she acquired the bag. She's going to need some help in finding who she is.

Cade is a private investigator. When a gorgeous woman walks into his office asking for his help, who is he to turn her down? Things really get sticky when her memories start to come back and realizes that she's being hunted.

This is a shorter story than what Ms. Roberts usually writes, so therefore was a quick read. You don't learn much about the diamond till nearer the end of the book when Bailey's memories start to return. That aspect of things made the book drag a bit for me, but it was still enjoyable.

Captive Star
This is the second book in the Stars of Mithra Trilogy.

M.J. is a tough, take no crap from anyone type of a person. So, when she's falsely accused of jumping bail, she fights back. The bounty hunter she's fighting against, tosses her over his shoulder and carts her out of the apartment, keeping her captive and handcuffed.

The bounty Jack was given on M.J.stated she shot her lover. After talking with her, he realizes the bounty was a ruse. Was it to get to him or to her? Finding what she has been carrying in her purse, makes him realize the intruder was after her.

I had a hard time with this one. M.J. is fighting tooth and nail against Jack. She refuses to tell him much of anything, yet there's an attraction between them. It didn't seem right to me on that angle. Jack rants at her and suddenly she's all gooey? It wasn't quite believable.

Secret Star
This is the third book in the Stars of Mithra trilogy.

Grace seems to have it all, looks, money, fame... except what she wants most. Someone that will see beyond her face and look at who she is inside.

Seth is a Lieutenant on the police force. He was called to Grace's home for a homicide. Someone threw her over the balcony, killing her. Or so he thought until she walked in the house, pointing a gun at him.

In the final book we are given more information in regards to the villain in this trilogy, and how he will stop at nothing to gain the Stars and have Grace by his side for eternity. Typical bad guy persona, really. I'd like to say there were no surprises in this book, but the way Seth still thought of, and even treated a couple times, Grace, even after he saw who Grace was like on the inside made me almost put the book down.

Added to this, there seemed to be a bit of "past lives" brought into this story between Grace, Seth and Gregory. This story angle was not fleshed out very well, and had me confused.

This trilogy is shorter in content than what I'm used to with Ms. Roberts' books. It might be part of my issue as things moved fast and questions were not really answered. I don't believe I'll be rereading this trilogy, sad to say.

Two stars is an unusual response from me. Generally a book that I'm not prepared to give four stars to is one that I don't finish. I finished this because I was fascinated by her apparent views of men and women. I seldom read for pure escapism; I need to at least analyze the author. My analysis here may be partly wrong because I have read none of her other books, so she may be just writing for an audience, but that also reflects her view of who men and women are. Her women here are strong, but maaipulative, but even Bailey goes agog at the strong cave man below the surface present in the three men. Yes, she does seem fo believe that below the surface lies caveman probably no higher than homo erectus (excuse me homo erectus; you were, after all, the longest in terms of longevity as a dominant species of any of the homos). If the research is correct, these women are due for a shock. Cavemen may be desirable short-term lovers, but they don't seem to satisfy as husbands and women's efforts to change them from one to the other are rarely successful. I found her depiction of men and women insulting to men and women and to the reader. I also found her going fantasy at the end insulting to good fantasy. I probably should, but won't, explore Nora Roberts further.

2.5*
I found this book to be the most disappointing in the “Stars of Mithra” series. The heroine, Grace Fontaine and the hero Seth Buchanan were both too cliched. She was a rich beautiful socialite who also was a generous, caring benefactor to sick children. Grace’s awful family just added to thew cliché. He was a tough, hard working cop who put his job above a private live, just too much. The chemistry between them both felt forced. There was some mention of previous lives shared by Grace, Seth and our villain, and I would have liked more development of this than the villain’s attempts to get the Stars. That was just getting too implausible. It just didn't have the same suspense and mystery as the previous 2 books. The side romances of Bailey and Cade and M.J. And Jack were fun and helped keep the momentum from the 2 previous books, but it was still a disappointment.
I have done reviews of the other books in this series separately.

Solid romance series

Early series from Nora Roberts. Predictable but comfortable. I don’t know why the made up country names, as a person comfortable with geography it annoys me, but maybe it saves on having to research a real country. Easy and quick read to escape a little. Obviously her writing and research skills have improved quite a bit in the two decades since they were written, but enjoyable nonetheless.

And Again!

Nora Roberts never disappoints! I've read so many of her stories, and am always glad I did! From historical to paranormal, her stories leave you wanting to pick up another. I'm an avid reader and will always try another author but can never resist a Nora Roberts trilogy! Thanks, so much, for all the enjoyment that your work has given me! Especially now that I'm retired and quarantined!

This is a series you can read over and over again. Mythical powers, priceless jewels, murder, greed, and live.
Three friends who all have a part to play and the men they need along the way
It’s fabulous to have all 3 books of the series in one volume.
A great read that you won’t put down

What Are In The Stars?

Nora Roberts has never failed to captivate with her writing. As simple as these readings were, they were ensnaring! When she writes, her words are like vines that wrap around and draw you in. Struggle as you will, the story will not let you go.

I love reading Nora Roberts trilogies or anything else she writes. I'm a Maryland native and recognize the places she writes about. This series had romance, suspense, and fantasy. I highly recommend it.

I've loved reading Nora Roberts for many years. It has been a while since I've picked up one of her books. I was thrilled when I found this trilogy, what better way to read her than binge reading?

So enjoyed this trilogy! Bailey, MJ and Grace are the best family anyone could have.

Terrific Trilogy Spoiler Alert

I've never read these books before. But I loved them. How each woman found the man that was meant for her. I wasn't going to finish the last story but I couldn't resist it. I had to read all the way to the end.

Very entertaining.

Three lovely stories blending the pagan, the magical and real life together. Loved the bond amongst Bailey, M J and Grace. There is a lot of action, some love at first sight and the crazy created by someones obsession.

I am a huge fan of Nora Roberts

I have read almost everything written by this author. I love her trilogies. There is usually the mystical, magical in her stories. The characters in the stars trilogy were unique. But so was the story. Well done.

Good Trilogy

I always like reading Nora Roberts trilogies, she never disappoints her reader's.
This one is full of twists dnd turns and although it us predictable that the three girls are going to wind up with these men, it is interesting to read how they get there.

hard to believe this was written by the author of Irish Thoroughbred!!!!

This whole series was a dog!! She’s an up and coming author, usually has a real flair for character development, but this book(s) sure didn’t showcase that!!!

Worth it...

As always with Nora Roberts. She does not disappoint. Her characters are always human, with quirks and hiccups. Wish the new books were a little less expensive.
