Like millions of kids, I joined a local karate school during the Bruce Lee and Karate Kid booms of the 70s and 80s. I was a chubby 13-year old dealing with bullies, bad clothes, and a mouth-full of braces.

I idolized my karate instructors and completely immersed myself in the martial arts lifestyle of healthy eating, training hard, and sharing the knowledge. They exercised and carefully watched what they ate. My parents smoked and fed us on a regular diet of TV dinners and ice cream.
