It is about a man's immigration from the Azores Islands to Canada in 1957 . Told from the viewpoints of José Pires, the title character, and his grandson, the story includes moments of love and loss, family, devotion, and laughter. With two distinct artistic styles (realistic pencil sketches for the present and cartoony for the past), this graphic novel lovingly explores the themes of saudade (a Portuguese word meaning a simultaneous sense of love and loss) and obrigado (thankfulness).
