I love this book, not because it's the most revealing memoir ever, but because it is doing what the best fiction does: transport me to a different time and place and allow my imagination to roam free. Who would have thought a memoir would do that so much better than many of the novels I have read lately? Not me, but it's a pleasant surprise.

I am really loving this book. I am forcing myself to read it in smaller chunks than usual so I can draw it out longer. I also refuse to take it to the office; I don't want work interfering as I live the life of a poet and artist in 1970's New York with Patti and Robert.

I thought the language and tone a little overwrought at first, but now that I'm in Patti's groove, I understand that the language is about capturing the way you think when you're young and romantic. Patti Smith has always had a poetic way of writing, and it colors her life story much the same way it does her music.
