If in this world you are confronted with absolute power—power unmitigated, unrestrained, extending to every area of human life—[...] you are driven to realize that the only possible response to it is not some alternative power arrangement, more humane, more enlightened. The only possible response to absolute power is the absolute love which our Lord brought into the world.

As Christians, we know that here we have no continuing city, that crowns roll in the dust, and every earthly kingdom must sometimes flounder. Whereas, we acknowledge a king men did not crown and cannot dethrone, as we are citizens of a city of God they did not build and cannot destroy.

If I am correct that Christendom is over but Christ is not over...then in that survival lies the promise of freedom again. But of course, the Western world can very well lose freedom, at any rate temporally—there can be another dark age.

Let us then avert our eyes from the wroth to come, which would seem now to be upon us, and like Augustine follow Blake's golden string beyond the impending darkness. For it is in the breakdown of power rather than in its triumph that men may discern its true nature and, in an awareness of their own inadequacy when confronted with such a breakdown, that they can best understand who and what they are.
