The twists & turns of lives, based on singular events, pressure mounts, something happens, causes a change; when Ray was at school, undiagnosed in his dsylexia, living with the consequences of teachers and pupils, pushed by parents to keep returning. Then in one day everything changes.
At work, the boss takes his frustration out on his son, son takes it out on Ray, he tries to avoid it, then one day it all changes.

Excellent storytelling, despite Maurice's cantankerous disposition and reluctant sentimentality.
Who could imagine that a single coin could be the cause of so much devastation.
And that ease with which young women were institutionalised.
The many undiagnosed differences in humans, which sets them aside, creates experiences which affect how they conduct themselves as adults.

Maurice Hannigan is up to something. He's 84 and is having a drink in a bar, having sold everything, booked into a hotel for a night, and now he's toasting 5 people before whatever it is he has planned.

I don't warm to him in the first 5 pages and this is the 2nd time I've started this book, but now that he's toasting his brother Anthony, I'm willing to spend this snowy afternoon listening to him recount his life.

I almost quit on my Irish reading expedition, after 2 disappointments, but then this bestselling title arrived and I thought, this is worth a try, a stream-of-consciousness 84 year old protagonist with a tale or five to share.
