Wow. In a page and a half preface written in 2006, the series editor uses the word "pioneer" FIVE times to refer to lesbian writers or publishers before the 1980s. Not only is this idea that nothing happened in the context of queer writing and publishing in English before then inaccurate and oversimplified, this term is so colonialist! Plus it's just bad writing! Well this book is not off to a good start.

Ha! In another interview quoted in an essay, Taylor calls "Whisper Their Love," which was chosen by her publisher, "a disgusting title."

Haha, Valerie Taylor in an interview in the appendix after the novel: "At 81 [her age], you never know what you might be doing tomorrow. You might be dead." She doesn't beat around the bush.

I think I'd have rather read a novel about all the queers at the party and the gay bar then Joyce. Although it's a bummer you can see the author's internalized homophobia in the descriptions and her anti-butch femme stuff.

This book is so full on with its misandry and hererophobia, I have a hard time believing it's going to turn it around to conform to the censorship standards of the 1950s and establish Joyce as a happy heterosexual woman.

Ah yes, the woman she's going to fall in love with reminds her of her mother. Mommy issues!

I made it through the preface and introduction for this 1950s lesbian pulp classic, but I think that's it for me for the #Readathon! Time for bed. But four books and the start of a fifth is pretty good, right? I read for 11 hours today!
