I know a lot of writers say they can’t read while they are writing, but if I don’t keep reading, I eventually crawl to a halt. It’s like I forget what words can do. I don’t need the books to be at all like mine, though I don’t mind if they are — the most important thing is that they do something to me. Make me laugh, or wonder, or rage. Then my brain says, right, good, let’s get to work, you and I.

Katie Hanna It feels like I need to read even MORE while I am writing, then when I'm not. Words coming in = words going out.

Lacey Pfalz I agree! Reading someone else’s work while writing not only inspires me, but gives me an different perspective on my own writing.

Trisha I agree! Reading inspires me to write more.

Mary Same for me! We can't keep going unless our tank is full. And for me, reading is the most important form of inspiration, because it's the same medium of words and story.

E.F.B. So much this. I read every night no matter what else is going on. The only time I don't is when I'm too sick to do so. Honestly, I think if I tried not reading just because I was writing, my brain would convince me I must sick, therefore I can't write either. :P

If I put words out, I must put word back in. Reading is writing fuel.

Georgina This happens to me too! If I stop reading, even for a little while, my writing grinds to a halt. It's as though my brain becomes sleepy, and less motivated. I lose all inspiration, and books themselves are a wondrous source of inspiration.

message 7: by Minnie (new)

Minnie I've only just started writing, and it is all because I love reading. Why would I stop doing what I love? I read every day and that is not going to change.

Dom Spencer Honest this is so applicable to the writing of my senior thesis, like whew girl, I need to binge shiver and donna tart's books!

Claire Hattendorf Reading just the right thing-it wakes me up & makes me realize that I can write something that affects someone that much. Reading & writing make people think. All of us. That’s not just important, it’s necessary.
