Ok, so the romance is well written, but there are some niggling undercurrents that I can't quite define that are bugging me. But the attention to historical detail, and the general attitudes of the day (especially towards women) seem well handled considering the time and location. But yeah...it's a fantastic book but I need to finish it before I can decide if the series is for me.

When I first read this book, I hated it for reasons I can't fathom right now. I absolutely love this book the second time around, and to read about history from a protagonist who is also from another point in history is fascinating, and it rings true. No whitewashing of history here, it's got grit and brawn, as well as depth and beauty.
