Two of the strangest things in the metro, watching people come and go, that there were no Black people and the ticket collector and station manager were women. (Something she will notice in all the stations)

Notes From a Trip to Russia
It is interesting the first essay is Lorde visiting Russia, being an outsider to her outsider, on a different scale to that which she experiences at home.
Her observations begin with the woman in the seat in front of her on the plane, travelling alone. She helps her, notices three medals.
"Hero of the Republic medals, I learned later. Earned for hard work."
