I thought this book is supposed to be about a ship trapped in the ice in the 1840s with crew members trying to survive the winter as unknown monsters stalk them. But the last 60 pages have been flashbacks exploring the love lives of the crew. What happened to surviving? The monsters? All the spookiness? This book is lucky that I am partial to period pieces otherwise I might have put this down.

I'm coming to the end and the book has stopped to lecture me about the arctic native folklore and explain the source of the monster. It's not done from someone's point of view or a dialogue exchange. Instead it turns into a text book for 20 pages. That's kind of a bad/lazy inorganic way to wrap things up. I almost wish they left it all as a mystery rather than doing this.
