Composting our bodies may be "as close as science is going to get to reincarnation." Fun facts: As of 2003, 70% of Swedes opt for cremation... possibly due to the fact that burial requires sharing of a grave: every 25 years, a grave is dug up, made deeper, and another person placed on top. The release of mercury in dental fillings is the most environmentally hazardous aspect of cremation.

The idea of a full body transplant in which a head is grafted onto a living-heart cadaver is disturbing. The experiments with animals leading up to the possibility is heartbreaking.

Apparently Thomas Edison thought the animating power in our body -- our "soul" if you will -- was made up of smaller-than-microscopic living beings inhabiting our cells who evacuated upon death. Furthermore, he thought these creatures acted in shifts to store our memories: remembering something requires us to "get in touch" with the shift that was on duty when the recording occurred.

"By and large, the dead aren't very talented. They can't play water polo, or lace up their boots, or maximize market share. They can't tell a joke, and they can't dance for beans. There is one thing dead people excel at. They're very good at handling pain."

Emily Now that I'm a few weeks into Anatomy lab, I think I'd really love to get around to reading this.

Faeeza Ooh I want to hear about your experiences! And you definitely should. It's both informative and entertaining.
