Life in Amsterdam couldn't be more different for Cyril than in Ireland and the contrast in the upbringings of he and his friend Baastien speak volumes for how society's attitudes contribute to the dysfunction of those who are 'different'.
And then NY in the 80's, somewhere between the two.
Now he has come full circle, back in Ireland to face up to his cowardly actions and try live a more honest life.

Maude and Charles, what a couple, the exaggeration of the "my adopted son, my adopted father", a kind of parody that is fulfilled with every gesture, invitation, in ensuring Cyril knows his place, which is 'not a real Avery' the father sticking to that line and yet raising him in such comfort. Is it mere entertainment, or is it meant to suggest something that's usually so subtle that its ignored. Intriguing.

Whisked away from the opening pages, from the horrific public banishment in front of the church congregation of a 16 year old, to the bus ride to Dublin, where she means Sean, and a new life in Dublin. She's such an enterprising young woman, I'm looking forward to following her story and that of the narrator, who in this first part, speaks from the womb.
