On p61 there is a calm flash of brilliance which suddenly connects what up until now looked like a standard YA appeal for easy "feels" back into critical possibilities grounded in 2010s Australia. There is the description of the benign, small-minded and cowardly xenophobe who attempts to be as apolitical as possible. I think Steiner's politics is an accurate depiction of what is happening extensively today!

It started off so promising but the Hubermanns are stereotypes (the tough fish-wife who rules the roost and the sensitive, artistic, "hen-pecked" husband who is the only kind influence in the child's life (sort of like Anne of Green Gables, except those ones were brother and sister and if Frau Hubermann has a heart of gold it is much better hidden. Hundreds of pages still though, so maybe it will improve.
