I am enjoying this one. The breaks to read novels and such don't detract from the archeology for me. {Smile}

I finished the last chapter last night. I really enjoyed this one. It's a pretty good overview of urban and rural archeology of the period. {SMILE}

He says he expected medieval archeology to be nice and simple, like they taught in school. There, you're mainly taught history commissioned by the elite. They're rarely interested in commoners as long as they're "behaving themselves." If their taxes and work obligations are on time and in full, and they don't riot, they're behaving themselves. How clumped their houses are is more important to archeology. {SMILE}

He's finally getting into the interplay of history and archeology that I love. Being able to cross-check witht he historical record adds whole layers of richness to an archeological dig. He points out that you wouldn't realized which changes were brought on by the new administration after the war of 1066. Likewise, change in fashion can be used to date a site only if you know when things were fashionable. {Smile}

Janika I'm glad you enjoy it now that you're further along!

Anne Elizabeth I really am enjoying it now. thanks for recommending it. When he isn't fussing about much more he likes prehistoric archeology, I can concentrate on the interplay of history and archeology that fascinates me in historical archeology. Together they can shed light on things that neither discipline pays attention to on its own. {SMILE}
