I knew my mother didn’t trust the banks, so she kept her money hidden in a champagne bottle, which she buried back there. I’d only come to know about it because I’d once caught her burying it in the middle of the night. But if I could find it, then I could run off with it and start my life anew.

sitting on a bus on the other side of the highway, headed in the other direction – my nose pressed up against the wind, my mind buzzing with big-city lights. Immediately I glanced back at the bus as it passed on by. But the moment was gone. With one bus headed towards the past and the other towards the future, the gap between us grew quickly until it disappeared altogether in the mist that clung to the window.
