Her father had wanted to hurt her, because she had hurt him.

He said, “It didn’t seem real when I was doing it. Like I wasn’t awake.”

“Do you know,” she whispered, “what they did to me in the mines?”

He closed his eyes.

She described it. He let her. Water slid from beneath his eyelids.

“I told my father I loved him.” Her words were abrupt. “It was the last thing I said to him.”

i kinda...like roshar. He infuriates me sometimes. but he's such a well written character.

“What did you tell the queen?”

“I told her about you.”

“What, exactly?”

He hesitated. “I’m afraid to say.”

“I want you to.”

“You might leave.”

“I won’t.”

He stayed silent.

She said, “I give you my word.”

“I told her that I belong to you, and no other. I said that I was sorry.”

“There,” Sarsine said, once Kestrel stood before the reflection. “You look almost like a proper Valorian lady. That’s what you are. When I first saw you, I hated you.”

Kestrel stared at herself. She didn’t see what was worth hating. She didn’t see much of anything. Just a shadow of a girl in a nice dress. She whispered, “Am I despicable?”

Sarsine’s smile was sad. “No.”

It wasn’t until he was alone in the hallway, sagged against the wall, that he touched where she had hit him. His fingers came away wet. He stared at the tears. They shone on his fingertips like blood.

She caught the silvery scent of the nighttime drug. It would be a blessing to forget. After all, what was there to remember?Someone she never could have had. Friends dead or gone. A father who did not love her. Water ran over her tongue, cool and delicious. She forgot the pain, forgot where she was, forgot who she’d been, forgot that she had ever been afraid of forgetting.
