Damn…

“They were careless people,
Tom and Daisy — they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into
their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together,
and let other people clean up the mess they had made… “

“Why, my God! they used to go there by the hundreds.”

He took off his glasses and wiped them again, outside and in.
“The poor son-of-a-bitch,” he said.”

Very empathetic

“But it wasn’t any use. Nobody came.”

“I wanted to get somebody for him. I wanted to go into the room where he lay and reassure
him: “I’ll get somebody for you, Gatsby. Don’t worry. Just trust me and I’ll get somebody for you ——”

“So I walked away
and left him standing there in the moonlight — watching over nothing.”

“and only the dead dream
fought on as the afternoon slipped away, trying to touch what was no longer tangible,
struggling unhappily, undespairingly, toward that lost voice across the room.”

I don’t like either Tom or Daisy at all

“I wouldn’t ask too much of her,” I ventured. “You can’t repeat the past.”

“Can’t repeat the past?” he cried incredulously. “Why of course you can!”

“There must have been moments even that afternoon whe Daisy tumbled short of his dreams — not through her own fault, but because of the colossal vitality of his illusion. It had gone beyond her, beyond everything. He had thrown himself into it with a creative passion, adding to it all the time, decking it out with every bright feather that drifted his way.“
