“For what then matters is to bear witness to the uniquely human potential at its best, which is to transform a personal tragedy into a triumph, to turn one’s predicament into a human achievement.”

“The truth—that love is the ultimate and the highest goal to which man can aspire. Then I grasped the meaning of the greatest secret that human poetry and human thought and belief have to impart: The salvation of man is through love and in love.”

This is a series of novellas. I just read Fire and Cloud in one sitting. I don’t currently have the words to express how hard that one was to read. It was brutally honest.

Nietzsche, he says a lot. Essentially, dark motive is human nature. We desire “the will to power”…. sounds a little like Capitalist America. You are to become your own god. Human existence is a tragedy.

I don’t agree with him a lot, but I like what he says about Art. He views art as somewhat of an antidote to this painful life we live… I like art.

Socrates’ Ion:

Socrates is a lot more of a fan of poetry than Plato.

“And what they say is true, for a poet is a light and winged thing, and holy, and never able to compose until he has become inspired…”

I like that.

Plato’s Republic, Book X

Three Arts concerned with all things:
-one which uses
-one which makes
-one which imitates

The user has the greatest experience.

Imitators (poets) know only appearance and not what is real.

True Beauty and Rightness is relative exclusively to Nature or the Artist.

Poetry can be enjoyed but to assume that it is right would be a betrayal of truth.

These characters are becoming increasingly real. I’ve never read literature quite like this before. It’s wonderful.
