Even though I know this true story (and I've seen the TV show), the first person (9/10 year old voice) narrating is absolutely gutting me! 😩

I’d given him more information than I’d meant to and I felt off-kilter. There was something about Patrick that made me want to tell him everything. I wanted to crawl into his lap where he’d keep me safe and I’d tell him all my secrets. He’d say magical words that would fix the mess my life had become.

“I don’t know what brought you to Hadley,” he said. “But I have a feeling you’ve come to the right place.”

"I know your family, Rin. You don't have a nephew."

"Genealogy is complicated. He's the half-son of my third cousin completely removed!"

Our TV has a machine that reads the closed captioning so it can substitute for bad words. For example, if someone says "butt," the machine replaces it with "toe," so people on our TV say things like "I want to kick your toe." Once we watched a show called The Penis Van Homosexual Show, which made Dad laugh so hard he started crying.''
"Linda," he said.. "Look! It's The Dick Van Dyke Show!"

Only sticking with this on the hope that Mr. Fowler, Mama, and Trent die slow, painful deaths by the end. So far, I've hated everything about this! 🤬🤬🤬

“Is there some kind of code you guys go by?”
“Only that we’re smarter than the av-er-age bear.” His impersonation of Yogi Bear was disturbingly good. I couldn’t help but laugh.
“Do all park rangers make Yogi Bear jokes?”
He grinned & put on his Yogi voice again. “That’s Mr Ranger, sir to you, Boo-Boo.”

Robert & I were at a stalemate. I thought proving I knew they were watching me would get him to back off, but apparently, I was incorrect. I wouldn’t admit I was the Windrose & he wouldn’t admit he was wrong. So I got the nameless, faceless private security employee who photographed my every move like I was a Disney starlet who had just graduated to adult movies & he was looking to get pictures of me topless.
