“Breathe!”

I can’t breathe! Or maybe I’m breathing too much. Gage’s lips suction around my nipple and I tremble all over, shivering and breaking out in goosebumps. When he flicks his tongue over my erect nipple, I groan so loud that it echoes around the bathroom. His hair tickles my chin when he moves to the other side, and at the first lick, I’m breaking all the rules and grabbing his head again.

A clawfoot tub, a towel heater, and a cold stone floor are apparently the sexiest things to ever exist. Bathrooms must be our thing. Because my ass is sitting on the edge of the tub, a hot towel is wrapped around my waist, and my feet are resting on the cold floor, all while I’m learning that nipples are incredible. Gage’s tongue is incredible. His mouth is fucking sinful.

🔥🥵🔥 SHEESH!

“High me had high dope. Drunk me had drunk dope. Now I need to find my sober dope. You’re my sober dope, Alexei. My feel-good drug. Instead of you being a substance or a thing I can overindulge in or abuse, you’re the best kind of dope because you tell me when to stop.”

Sober dope. I’ve never been anyone’s feel-good drug before. I wrap my arms around his neck and just breathe with him.

🥴OMG!

Alexei proved a point to me. I can handle things on my own. We’re getting into a relationship as people, not as an addict and the son of an addict. We’re two guys falling in love because of our personalities and the way they mesh. He proved to me that he won’t let me ruin him, he can handle things without me too, and he honestly has my best interests at heart while making sure he’s taking care of himself, too.

“I gave you space so you could process. This time, because it’s still so new and it’s one of the hardest things you’ve faced since getting home, you needed to know that you had what it took. That you could handle it. Without me. If the unspeakable ever does happen and our soulmateship comes to an end, you have the proof that you can handle things without me. I did it for us. For you. For the survival of us.”

“I’m not going to leave you just because I give you space. You need to stop fearing that we’re going to break up every time something happens.”

“But you didn’t want to see me for two weeks,” I say, my throat hitching.

“Oh, I
really wanted to see you. Like, more than anything. I annoyed the shit out of Dad by talking about you all the time, and now the name Gage is banned after dinner.

“If you think I want to break up, you don't understand the concept of soulmates. Just because we fight, need space, treat each other poorly, or disagree doesn’t mean we’re breaking up. We’re going to fight. It happens in all relationships. I happen to think we’re one of the good ones, so a bit of fighting is tolerable. Unless we turn into one of those bad relationships, we’re okay to fight and not break up.”

I’m staring at him, tears dripping down my cheeks.

“Oh, Alexei,” he says, pulling me in for another hug. “Are you okay?”

“Other than my dad, no one really does nice things for me. I don’t really have anyone close in my life. This is… you just… damn you for making me unable to blurt my neurotic rambly things!”

“I wanna do all the nice things for you,” he says, and then he adds, “and all the dirty things.”

Joe saw him to the front door, relieved at last that someone had taken an interest, but concerned that what had started out as an intriguing mystery about a rock might now have something to do with murder.

😲 This plot just got a LOT more interesting!

David showed Joe the last paragraph. Joe wondered about the coincidence. Two men vanishing on the same date suggested nothing sinister. David ran his finger along the last sentence. Joe understood his concern.

"We refer our readers to previous editions of the Gazette for today’s date for similar unaccountable disappearances on the same date, and the missing men had been found murdered eighteen days later."

If everything was so right in his world, then why was he still unsettled? Perhaps, because he was still recovering from years in the workhouse, being held at knifepoint, and seeing Dalston nearly killed. That would unnerve anyone, but it wasn't what troubled him. His sense of foreboding came from a certainty that whatever was to happen had something to do with this place of beauty and the secrets of its past.

If the days before were mystifying, there was no word for the days that came after. A house of unlikely characters, all of whom tried to communicate by copying his language of signs. A bedroom with Dalston, privacy, a bed each, but only one ever used. Being able to sleep together and talk openly to others, offered a life he'd never imagined possible.

Let's do this!

After years of harsh living in the workhouse, they had a safe place they could call home. A pauper one minute, and feeling like the richest man in the world the next as His Lordship’s foundation clothed him, treated him, cared for him, and all the while, Dalston loved him. Fine meals, a shared bed, a long journey to Cornwall by train, and many other first experiences culminated in his arriving at the academy.

Joe stood by the bed, watching Dalston as he slept. His bare chest rose and fell in regular rhythm, and his mouth was open, as if he’d frozen halfway to a smile. A smile was what Joe offered him in return. He wanted to bend down and kiss him as they’d done the night before, but it was early, and Dalston liked to sleep. He could now. They both could, and peacefully, too.

Gonna immerse myself in this one today

“A white man’s voice singing negro rhythms with a rural flavor changed life overnight for Elvis Presley.” The article mapped the story of his meteoric rise: growing up in Tupelo, moving to Memphis, lugging his guitar every day to Humes High School. How Sam Phillips discovered his talent, how Elvis appeared on the Grand Ole Opry within a month of his first record and was today a star of the Louisiana Hayride.

He sang his second song, “Blue Moon of Kentucky,” and the crowd went even wilder. Elvis recalled with some wonder, “I came offstage, and my manager told me that they was hollering because I was wiggling my legs. I went back out for an encore, and I did a little more, and the more I did, the wilder they went.” Sam Phillips and Bob Neal stood watching from the wings. This was beyond their wildest expectations.

"That was just his way of tapping his foot. I think with those loose britches that we wore—they weren’t pegged, they had lots of material and pleated fronts—you shook your leg and it made it look like all hell was going on under there. During the instrumental parts he would back off from the mike and be playing and shaking, and the crowd would just go wild, but he thought they were actually making fun of him.”

“It was my first big appearance in front of an audience, and I came out and I was doing [my first number], and everybody was hollering and I didn’t know what they were hollering at.”

“We were all scared to death,” said Scotty. “Here we come with two little funky instruments and a whole park full of people, and (19 year old) Elvis, instead of just tapping his foot, well, he was kind of jiggling."
