I stuck to the posted speed limits and signaled when I changed lanes. I'm convinced that car insurance companies would get very rich from not paying claims and hospital traffic would slow to a crawl on major holidays if everyone drove as if they had a dead man in their trunk and a mortal fear of going to jail for twenty to life in the event they ever got pulled over and the police checked their car's contents.

"It wouldn’t be very professional of me to show up at his room with a bottle of chocolate sauce and ask if he minds if I lick it off his naked torso.”

“So you have thought about it.”

“Of course I have! In great detail, but that’s where he’s staying. Firmly in the spank bank labelled things I probably shouldn’t think about during self-gratification but I won’t admit to, so it doesn’t count.”

If this is madness, then I embrace it. He stood before her, this phantom of her broken mind. He took her hand. It felt cool and solid, hardly phantasmic at all.

“I didn’t realize hallucinations could be so convincing,” she told him conversationally. If she had lost her mind, she might as well really lean into it. Her madness was giving her such soothing company.

The boy tucked her hair behind her ear.

Sofia rolled her eyes toward the woman. Then they kept on rolling. They rolled past the horrified faces of the medical men and the ghosts gathered behind them, including the new ghost bent over his warm corpse on the ground. Her eyes rolled past the beautiful boy made of water and the concerned windows of the house itself. Then they rolled into the back of her head to examine her nightmares as she passed out.

Sofia lamented that she was still alive.

“Please don’t feel that way,” said the ghoul who lived in the wall. He had far too many eyes. “There are many wonderful things about being alive.”

“It’s very nice not being tormented by the minions of Hell,” a dark demon said. “The taunting and pricking of pitchforks and burning hellfire seems cliché, it’s rather fun at first, but like everything else, it gets old.”

Without the mystery/suspense/drama of the previous series, this much-anticipated spin-off is just silly and dull. Very disappointing so far. 😒

It was the intangibles that proved much more difficult to establish throughout galactic society. Freedom, for example. Freedom to speak one’s mind, to object, to dispute. Those who had led the rebellion had under-estimated the deeply buried desire of far too large a proportion of the population who simply preferred to be told what to do. Much easier it was to follow orders than to think for oneself.

Hmmm...

“You can’t just let people stay here for free.”

“I know that, but this isn’t any old guest.” I practically dance. “His name is Morgan and he’s really dreamy, and older than me, although I don’t know how old, but he’s bloody gorgeous and really strong. He didn’t even break a sweat when he caught me.”

“Caught you? Bloody hell, what have you been up to now?”

“I fell off the Christmas tree.”

She stares at me.

“As the self-appointed representatives of the spirits and spectres of Ashton House, we have designated you as our living liaison to the spirit community here in the house and grounds.”

“Really?” I reply, the exhilaration making me want to dance on the spot like an over-excited two-year-old. “What exactly does a living liaison to the spectres and spirits of the house and grounds actually do?”

“Oh, um.”
