Chapter 5: "On Trial" -- the account of the legal case against Bill Gothard, his countersuit, and the dismissal of that suit, in which the judge found his accusers credible.

"He told me he’d found evidence of harsh discipline for those who wound up at Gothard’s training centers, including disciplinary lock-in. He told me about doors being replaced due to damage caused by the kids inside trying to get out.

That image stuck with me for years. The panic of someone trapped inside. The drive to break free" (64).

A powerful indictment of the silence, cowardice, compromise and complicity of the white pulpit in the face of the brutality of lynching. Preached in the immediate aftermath of the Wilmington race massacre of 1898. Powerful preaching!

Chapter 4: on Bill Gothard and IBLP, with interviews, footnotes, and an analysis of the role that blogs had in empowering victims to tell their stories, especially the Recovering Grace website 2011–2014.
