It's nice to see a book with the ~mysterious boy~ trope that is actually about a girl who needs to save him and not the other way around.

This is a fun one. Good atmosphere. An interesting enough tale about witches woven through. The romance doesn't do anything for me at all and feels a little paint-by-numbers. But otherwise? Enjoyable.

The essay on a dying emo band, rape apologists, and misogyny is so effing good.

Good music writing, even on music I don't know or have investment in, is good writing, period.

Also, still one of the best book covers.

This book is so fascinating. I keep relating everything in it to everything I like to think about (which is a pretty grand statement, but it's true - I can kind of tie this into any and everything).

I always forget that, despite being so long, Hutchinson's books fly.

Fluency vs. Disfluency is now a thing I plan on obsessing over. Like. Pull the notebook out in the car in a parking lot to take notes kind of obsessing.

Williston, ND, fascinates me. I was out there for a friend's wedding -- well, a wedding in small-town Montana and Williston back in 2006 was the "biggest" place within a 50 mile drive -- and it was nothing. The Walmart was tiny and we ate at Applebee's (the only restaurant). Just a couple of years later, boom town.

This is cute. A little overdramatic for me, but it fits with the Bollywood threads throughout and I can see teen readers eating it up.

Add this book to the very short, but growing, list of YA books where a female main character masturbates.

It's amazing to read something which changes your entire perception of the story you've been told about someone's life. It's angering to see how many lies were created about Vivian by men who profited nicely from her work. Myths which reduced her to nanny and yet which also created an air of mystery and intrigue.

That this happened while she was still alive is even harder to reconcile.

So much of what's being said in here is relevant to so much that's been happening in social media the last few years relating to "you're either with or against" mentality. It's a powerful listen.

I'm not really that impressed. The writing feels really contrived, and the characters -- the "pushy" newspaper reporter and Georgia specifically -- are just shadows of characters.

One of the suggestions in this book that keeps me thinking is that we should all take off/delete our accounts on that one time-suck app. My best friend deleted all social media a few years back and doesn't miss it. But what she HAS said is that people who once were "friends" with her, don't bother to reach out now that she's not always "on" and that's been something hard to wrestle with.

Same insight as before: really compelling story but weak writing and a not-great narrator on audio. But the story keeps me going.
