Here's a phrase that indicates my (chief) problem with the book so far: "...the reformers firmly fixed gender and sexuality as the chief site of national and personal morality."
There is no grammatical error above; or rather we might say that the grammatical error above ("gender and sexuality" are a "site" rather than "sites") indicates Greven's underlying assumption that "gender and sexuality" are a single object.
