Is trite the word I'm searching for?

My disappointment in the character of Sheriff Bobby Torrez is growing; why do we need to have this character who contributes nothing to the storyline? I'm sure he is supposed to be charming, the stereotypical "man of few words" but he instead comes across as flat and makes both Estelle Reyes-Guzman and Bill Gastner seem like imbeciles for adoring his lazy ass as they do.

I can see that Havill wanted to bring in the whole Guzman clan (it's almost obligatory at this point in the series), but I think his method of bringing Francisco to Posadas from Leister is a stretch, as well as very questionable morally.

A good setup, and as usual multiple strands that will come together. I do miss Gastner, though; only a single brief mention in the first half of the book!
