After reading a couple of good contemporaries among the long sea of bad ones, I can now pinpoint one reason I can’t stand most of them: the more common “overwriting” in recent releases — here’s this character and their home struggles and their families and their friends and they are this exact race and have this exact dynamic like okay… let me discover that, or weave it in so it’s not so heavyhanded
