I have been looking forward to this book for months, and so far it does not disappoint. (Though it continues to annoy the fuck out of my how often covers thinwash characters. Temperance is not that svelte, cover artist!!!)

The casual diversity is SO lovely to read about. From aro rep to poly rep to multiple enbies and bi folks.

I must say, I really love the worldbuilding (the concept of printing and mind maps are fascinating) and appreciate Acaelus's devotion to Tarquin. Admittedly, though, Tarquin seems a lot younger than 35 (even a sheltered, pampered 35).

The counselor shrugged, and gave me a sympathetic, apologetic look. “I think your doctor can still get you Plan B. I think morning-after pills are still legal here.”

This book is incredible.

I'm definitely more demi than this book and all its allos are probably meant for, but sheesh the sheer number of times sex is mentioned and either Delilah and Claire feel horny (even while sitting next to each other during dinner and a conversation that doesn't lend itself to sexy thoughts) is ridiculous. I'm far more willing to give leeway because these are two women, but my demisexuality is cringing.

“Most of them do,” Delilah said.
Iris tapped her chin in thought for a second, then blew out a breath. “Okay, yeah, you’re right. Most of them do. Thank fuck I’m bi.”

I know what the author is going for, but like. She makes such an effort to include enbies, and then just says this? Transmen are men too ffs.

The diversity could be woven in a little better (the constant mention of white people and enbies is a little rough) but I'm loving this so far.

Bryce is willing to risk not only her own life but that of her family and friends to find out what Danika was doing with Sofie, but isn't willing to ally with Aidas to help free humans. And Maas really expects us to think Bryce is a good person? Is *Maas* even aware of what corner she's written herself into here???

I was wondering why half vamps hunted vamps, and I actually like the reason. It fits the world well.

Two thoughts so far: 1) Why is he interspersing French in the English? 2) Somehow, though Gabriel is literally telling us the story, it doesn't feel telling over showing? I'm able to picture exactly what he's saying. It's an interesting twist on the "imprisoned and must tell my story to my captor" plot trope.

Why the fuck was that prologue so damn long? So much of it was pointless exposition provided in dry info-dumps, all the characters die so I don’t see the point in introducing them only to kill them mere pages later, and none of it was intriguing bc we’re barely in Andry’s head despite him being the narrator. Plus, none of the characters are endearing to me. The writing is also really stiff and awkward.

Calling it now that Rob is the mysterious heir bc it’s impossibly obvious. But it’s not bad, obviously, that it’s obvious (unless Sebastian makes a big deal out of the revelation, in the sense that we’re not supposed to have guessed), since all the pieces have been laid out for us to pick up on.

Had something really upsetting happen (if you follow me on tumblr, that’s where I talk about it) and it’s amazing how much the calmness of Vaelin helps calm me down, because these panic attacks are beyond fucked.

Damn, going from acosf to this is like having whiplash. This book is pretty hetero- and cisnormative, but it's so good that it doesn't bother me that much. The writing and world-building and plot and characters more than make up for it.

I love the others, but Nortah remains my favorite (helps I read Raven’s Blade before Raven’s Shadow, I suppose)

I am kinda glad I read the duology first, so I know who lives and who doesn’t 😅
