The best thing I can say about Pynchon (and I can say many great things), what separates him from most authors, is the demand for paying attention. It makes for slow reading, but it's essential to get any enjoyment out of his writing, and challenges you to not just throw out what you're not looking for. Sometimes I want to just read, and escape, for a while. But there are times I need that difficulty, to push myself.
