The tone of this book is almost unbelievable. I would expect a slave, looking back and describing his condition in bondage, to describe it with outrage. Douglas speaks with incredible clarity and poise; he is a saint.

In this section, I couldn't help but thinking about how easily our justice system falls apart when prejudices take hold in police officers, judges, or jurors, and if in all three, it is just an old fashioned lynch mob...
