Jennifer is starting The Spirit Ring
I have been striking blanks for fantasy series this year. Nothing I have read has struck a chord with me. I can always count on Lois McMaster Bujold for giving me a good read in fantasy.

Jennifer is starting Prairie Fires: The American Dreams of Laura Ingalls Wilder
I am prepared for my childhood fondness of my love of Laura Ingalls Wilder and her books to be popped. I loved those books so much that I even dressed up as Laura one Halloween. I know now that pioneer life means hard work, starvation and poverty.

What I thought was a straightforward fantasy with an element of steampunk is now a weird blend of fantasy, steampunk (kinda), post apocalyptic world with a dose of science fiction.

This is a great way to refresh my memory of Season 1 Victoria TV show before season 2 starts. I can't help but think of Rufus Sewell as Lord Melbourne!

It has been over a decade since I have read one of my favorite childhood books. It is time for a re-read.

Who would have thought what to put on a cattle business sign would be so entertaining?
It was a bit of slow start, but it now getting interesting.

Being middle aged myself, it is so refreshing to read about a middle aged character who is going through a lot of growth and change in life.

With the 37th anniversary of the May 18, 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens fast approaching, I thought this was the perfect time to read this book.

This is probably the first fantasy book that takes place in my home Canadian province, Alberta! (yes the cover says it takes place in NorthWest Territories in 1875, but Alberta did not become a province until 1905. It was called NWT before that.) There is mention of the Stoney tribe, Bow River, Fort McLeod (just south of Calgary) and Chinooks.

This quote caught my attention:
Pug: "Fear holds and binds us and keeps us from growing, Nicholas. It kills a small piece of us each day. It holds us to what we know and keeps us from what's possible, and it is our worst enemy. Fear doesn't announce itself; it's disguised, and it's subtle. It's choosing the safe course; most of us have 'rational' reasons to avoid taking risks.

Interesting. I'm a geologist and I never realized that garnets had that many different compositions and colours.

Even though I'm finding Moirin not as an interesting character as Phedre from the previous 2 trilogies, I just adore Carey's world and prose. Love being back in Terre D'Ange!

This is a perfect fantasy novel for me. Excellent but unique magical system, engaging protagonist, and enough plot twists to keep me reading. It does have some "classical" fantasy tropes so far such as orphan boy possibly becoming the savior of mankind, aged teacher teaching said orphan in magic, but I am willing to overlook those for now.

This is what happens when a geologist goes to a winery in the Okanagan (south central British Columbia, Canada) and sees a book on the local geology. I buy the book and the wine!

I haven't read this series since 2008. I liked the first three, but became disappointed with the last two and decided to wait until the series was finished before resuming. I hope I can just jump in as I can barely remember the plot.
