I almost gave up on this a couple of times. It starts off hot but then bogs down for a long time. Glad I stuck with it, it really cooks after a while.

I really love the idea of this book, but boy is it heavy going. I think I'm in my third attempt, and the worldbuilding is fantastic. But there are so many characters, who spend so much time talking about so many other characters, that I want to bang my head into the wall.

This is not an easy book to pick up and read, but it's even harder to put down. What I love is how the many intricate layers of plot are revealed so gracefully.

The more I read this, the more I wonder what Amazon's point is. No one there is happy, it doesn't exist to do good, it doesn't even seem to make money. As far as I can tell, it exists because Jeff Bezos wants it to, and he has the willpower to make it so. I don't see it lasting 6 months after he's gone, at least not in recognizeable form.

I will sometimes read a thriller, if it's good. This is. It's caused be to set aside some other things in its favor, as it casts them in a poor light. A few inconsistencies in tone and perspective, but very, very solid and entertaining.

OK, if this guy has one more extended description of the gemstones someone is wearing, or goes into rhapsodies about colors again, I'm gonna hurl.

David Traver Adolphus is reading The Grendel Affair (SPI Files, #1)
This is the most anticlimactic book I've ever read, to the point I'm thinking there are some pages missing. 300 pages of build up, "I spot the grendel" and two paragraphs later it's all wrapped up? Seriously, this is either a technical error or a drastic structural flaw in the book.

Having a very good time with this so far. I'm really fond of these freshman novels, where the author doesn't yet know what is and isn't possible. I like the rawness and newness of it, and the unbridled ambition. Clearly set in the world of Jim Butcher...although what isn't, these days?

Well, it's looking like it was worth plowing through Book 3 for this. Whatever else, you can't fault Newton's ambition.

Book is veering into wildly surprising territory, which is really saying something for this series.
