The protagonist, Amir, gets me riled up and angry with how he treats Hassan. I had to lay off the book a couple days after the final way he betrays their friendship. If I did not know that this is a novel about redemption I would have given up on the narrative then. As a portrait of modern Afghanistan the novel is informative as it poignantly illustrates the last 50 years of socio-political change.
