This could be my favourite book I have read this year, based solely on the first half!

I've been reading this book on and off for months. It's been that kind of a year haha. Anyway, regardless of how long it's taken, it doesn't change the fact that Of War And Ruin is a triumph of modern fantasy storytelling and that Ryan Cahill has shot to the top tier of my favourite authors. 10% left, I will be so sad when it's over, knowing the next book is not out yet!

These are trashy reads, but right now that's all I'm asking for.

I know I do.

The Bound And The Broken may soon be joining the ranks of Wheel Of Time, The Realm Of The Elderlings and Memory Sorrow And Thorn as one of my top tier fantasy series.

Other series heading in that direction are Outlander and Malazan, but this is just incredible. How on earth is it true that Cahill has only been writing a few short years?

The growth in his abilities from the first book to now is frightening.

I found a large section of this book meandering, wondering if it was going anywhere. I have to say it, but I thought Cahill was losing his way.

WRONG! It's coming together in grand fashion, it's astonishingly affecting. He writes war, battle and the strenuous aftermath in a way that reminds me of Erikson and Gemmell. Those are two authors you wouldn't normally compare, but there we go.

Cahill, you have my heart.

This is a brilliant novel. I know many will dismiss this as generic old school fantasy, but generic old school fantasy is selling bucketloads today at the hands of writers with bland prose.

This is better.
