ā€œIf felt real, the crying. More solid than the emptiness that had pressed on her chest a moment before. It felt as though the emotions that brought color to her life had been whipped away, leaving only a black-and-white sketch of reality behind. As though she had been suffocating and was now gasping to regain her breath. What was wrong with her?ā€

I didn’t realize this dealt with depression. So important. šŸ’›

A large portion of the first part of this book was from new POVs instead of being narrated from Bree’s head, as the rest of the series has been. I understand why the other POVs were necessary, but it has been odd to see so little of Bree in a story that is more or less all about her. I’m glad we’re going back to her now.

I’m not sure I ever read this first book tbh XD I know I read some of the later ones but this one is very unfamiliar to me. I think I just never went back to the beginning to see where Molly and Petula’s journey started.

I think this book added too many types of Otherborn. It reminds me of the Red Queen series in that I have a really hard time keeping track of all the different powers (and their corresponding colors). The first book felt manageable, but this one just exploded with all the different types of Otherborn.

ā€œChristians… want to believe that their communities are safer… than those of nonbelievers… [but] those communities are often worse *because* of the traditions and misapplied teachings of the Church. Trust can seem incompatible with transparency. Deference to authority can see irreconcilable with demands for accountability. Finding fault can seem unnecessary given the overarching emphasis on mercy.ā€
