Reading 2917 pages will nehva happen, but I'm enjoying browsing. Sir Laurence Olivier "...was the husband to Vivian Leigh...she was a greater star and a lesser actor." Nope. Nope. da Nope. Leigh and Plowright both were better actors than Olivier. Lord Laurence may have been mesmerizing in the theater, but his style was overblown on the screen. Watch Waterloo Bridge (Leigh.) Watch Enchanted April (Plowright.)

Linda Robinson is on page 78 of 400 of Most Blessed of the Patriarchs: Thomas Jefferson and the Empire of the Imagination
Coming out of the French and Indian War, Britain tried to recoup its war costs from the Colonies. "Americans in all regions snapped, almost in unison, to attention. A prospective community of suffering arose, binding Virginians to Bostonians." Jefferson and his fellow patriots thus could see themselves as true agents of empire at precisely the moment when myopic pols in London launched a misguided taxation assault.

Discussion around the New Book counter with a librarian - should I take this book home? I am not fond of books that were not published during a writer's lifetime because we don't know why the writer didn't pursue. This book, according to his wife, was the research that ended up with Jurassic Park. I took Vonnegut's posthumously published book back unread, but I'm trying this one. So far meh.

1 June 1917. Bolshevik Military Organization plans a garrison demonstration 60,000. Central Committee is focused on First All-Russian Congress of Soviets of Workers' and Soldiers' Deputies 3 June to 24. Lenin still "explaining" Bolshevik opposite to coalition. "The pilfering of the bourgeoisie is the source of the anarchy." MO again proposed an armed demonstration. No decision. A decision would soon be made for them.

Life sciences increasingly argue that human behaviour is determined by hormones, genes & synapses, rather than by free will-the same forces that determine the behaviour of chimpanzees, wolves & ants. Our judicial & political systems largely try to sweep such discoveries under the carpet. But in all frankness, how long can we maintain the wall separating the dept. of biology from the depts. of law & political science?

How did humans organize themselves in mass-cooperation networks, when they lacked the biological instincts necessary to sustain such networks? The short answer is that humans created imagined orders and devised scripts.

Linda Robinson is on page 134 of 496 of The Alphabet Versus the Goddess: The Conflict Between Word and Image
In discussing the Israelites and Greeks, alphabet vs. image, Greeks favor lots of images including graphic depictions of sex, including same sex. The author writes" A woman knows in her bones how to compete with another woman for a man's affection, but she will become demoralized if she must also compete with men." How does he know? Makes me skeptical of the whole book.

I was close to the earth, almost part of it, and the smell of the wet sod was heavy in my nostrils. It was the breath of the world. the world that was in the eternal throes of change all around me. Nature was restless; streams were gliding forward filled with a longing for unknown waters; winds were moving to and fro with the indecision of homeless wayfarers...

About 9,800 years ago cultivated grains lost their ability to propagate their own seeds. "China cultivated millet on the Yellow River, rice on the Yangtze; New Guinea, yams, taro and bananas; West Africa, gourds and sorghum; Aztec Mexico, maize and squash; the Incan Andes, potato and quinoa; and the Amazon basin, peanuts, manioc, and chili." The consequences for women were profound and none too happy.

Evolve as you will, your predators are evolving too. You get faster, they get faster-you'd better get even faster right away. You get tougher skin, they get sharper teeth. You get toxins, they get fancier guts. You get camouflage, they get color vision. You get bigger, they unhinge their ominous jaws. To respond, you need gobs of variation.

Linda Robinson is on page 228 of 376 of Loot: The Battle over the Stolen Treasures of the Ancient World
I looked up Doryphoros, touring the classical Greek statues, and read the Minneapolis Museum's description of their BC copy. Politically and legally correct - it was in a private collection prior to 1980. The same language all the museums use for antiquities with iffy provenance. "It's my mom's." One day the museums will figure out how to handle all this. Probably not in my lifetime. Or Zahi Hawass' either.
