Naming the last chapter after my favorite Explosions in the Sky song? I see what you're doing!

Not-so-accidentally spoiled myself and now I am beyond pissed because - up until the moment I knew what the big, bad secret was - I really, really loved this book. Childhood bffs and 2nd chance romance? Yes, please. WHY did it have to turn into such a weird, and frankly problematic, clusterfuck?

This has been an entertaining holiday read so far EXCEPT for the fact that every couple of pages you're being reminded what an absolute behemoth of a man the male MC is. I like tropey romance, and I do enjoy a good height difference, but this was laying it on a bit too thick for me. I can pretty much only roll my eyes at this point when I come across the word "big". The characters are fun, though.

The essay on hipsters was my favorite one so far.

So far this is very very different from what I expected it to be. An easy + accessible read but not really as informative as I had initially hoped

FINALLY stuff is happening!!
Holland remains by far the most interesting character, which is tragic in so many ways.

Lila is still annoying, but surprisingly less so than she was during the first 200 pages, or in AGOS? I still think VES could have *significantly* dialed down the knife comparisons, but at least not every second sentence mentions how very much unlike other girls she is, so. Progress!

If I have to read about Lila loving knives, playing with knives, or having a knife-like smile ONE MORE TIME, I might light this book on fire

I might have enjoyed this in 2017 (I am honestly not sure), but 2023 Me is already exhausted.

I do love this a lot, but also: reading this book means being in a near-constant state of anxiety.

i think this might be one of the best books i've read this year
...but the ending will 100% break my heart and i'm *not* ready
