Hoping for this to get me out of my reading rut. Pretty good so far.

Someone tell David Levithan that *this* is how you write a novel that covers fluidity of sexuality as a major theme

Ah, a potentially unreliable narrator (two, even!) making notes of someone else's scandal. If this is at least half as good as Heller's I'll love it

Some of Pullman's commentary in this is delightfully pithy. On "The Girl With No Hands": "However, the tale itself is disgusting...This tale and others like it must have spoken very deeply to many audiences, though, for it to spread so widely, or perhaps a great many people like stories of maiming, cruelty, and sentimental piety."

The corruption here runs so deep and cuts across all levels, I can't even fathom it. Makes so much of the injustice we perceive in our society seem piddly in comparison.

It's interesting how different bodies classify this; it was reviewed in the NY Times as middle grade, my library shelved it in adult non-fiction. Somehow I don't think either of those is quite correct. Regardless, this is shaping up to be a terrific collection. Great commentary on previous tellings of the classics and the details Pullman tweaks

It continues to impress me how O'Nan can write about such relatively mundane situations and yet hold my interest throughout

Goodness, this reads like a tense thriller!

Can't wait to see where this is going...

I love an author who can write a good party scene, and the one is the first story is great. The second story, Amundsen, is a total knockout. I'm getting hooked on Munro

I was planning on giving this one a pass until I read an excoriating negative review at NPR that piqued my interest. See, authors, sometimes bad reviews kindle interest! Anyway, I'm glad I did-totally sucked in and from what I've read so far I'm beginning to wonder if the NPR reviewer was willfully misreading this - it's a critique of modern Britain and traditional Western society, not a screed against female readers
