Since Christ has won a decisive victory over Satan, sin, and death in the past, future eschatological events must be seen as the completion of a redemption which has already begun. What will happen on the last day will be a culmination of what has been happening in these last days.

Jesus would not be the kind of Messiah that many of His people wanted Him to be, and they would not have the only kind of Messiah that he was prepared to be.

Therefore, we explain justification simply as the acceptance with which God receives us into his favor as righteous men. And we say that it consists in the remission of sins and the imputation of Christ's righteousness. Institutes III.XI.2
