This book has everything! Marriage, politicking, war and death, butch women, even the occasional salacious rumor!

I still say someone should keep this one in their back pocket. If they can adapt Washington's Spies they can adapt this one (and hopefully it would be a banger)

I think I'm gonna stand by this for the whole book: if Netflix ever runs out of Bridgerton to adapt, it should adapt this one next.

Well that board room is quite disgusting. Ans I'm amazed nobody agreed that they should stretch their legs or other appendages as appropriate at any point whatsoever.

Also 2/3 of the way through and no song contest, but this is moving a lot faster than Space Opera because the story is more present throughout

I'm getting the overwhelming impression the narrator recorded chapter 19 with a persistent chest cold.

"...desperately wanting your father's approval even though he thinks seatbelts are a government plot to oppress him specifically." I need to know how Valente got a hold of my therapy sessions.

This party is clearly the better place for some of this worldbuilding (that or the Eska examining who and what all the aliens are while the humans watch past Grand Prix performances)

About 2/3 of the way in and were finally close to the song contest portion. And I can't help but wonder why all the worldbuilding was summarized for us and then regurgitated again later. The best way would've been some kind of preparatory presentations, bc I'm sure these Earth dudes had a million questions on the way.

Decibel's speech about fighting fascism with theater is a real gut punch, I'll give it that. He even has a real point, people seek distraction from the world's problems in flashy, showy, fun (Todd in the Shadows made this point in the Witness retrospective btw).

I love the worldbuilding but I'm less of a fan of how we keep interrupting the story for it. Feeling very "GET ON WITH IT" about it

Not quite sure how I'd react to this specific alien encounter, but I appreciate its efforts. (Also I wonder which voice it would use for me that I would associate with warmth, as I'm astonishingly short on those. Maybe my grandparents, I recall them liking me well enough...)

The narration of this book is doing it a LOT of favors, giving me Jane Austen vibes weirdly enough. If you like books that spend a lot of time and a lot of words setting the vibe.

Two things are just killing the tension for me: 1. We already know how River's story ends so nothing here is actually a threat to her life, and 2. Alex Kingston writes her character the way Steven Moffatt does. A hypercompetent self-proclaimed "psychopath" who's the best at everything ever. It's such a boring way to write characters.

We could've done without the prelude and interludes entirely, in my opinion. I think they're there for shock value and people who are nostalgic about Ace and Seven, respectively.
