I wonder if id be harsher on this book if I didn't bounce so violently off of Chilling Effect. I imagine the short chapters, self-aware lines, and telling to showing ratio would get to someone under different conditions.

Yes, there is the odd quip, but at least this book has the balls to be sincere and handle heavy events more or less with the weight they deserve.

Also still love the newsfeed angle for some of the chapters, to give insight into what's going on outside of the main characters

So Vakar is obviously supposed to be Spock filtered through enough fan interpretation to kill a man.

Also I'm not having as much of a problem with the Spanish as kther reviewers. So much of the story is being told to me that I can get the gist just fine.

If I have to hear "well, that happened" one more time I'm gonna bang a head into a wall. Possibly my own head, possibly someone else's.

Also it really feels like the author read both that protagonists need to be cool and badass, AND that they need to struggle a lot for underdog vibes, and tried to go hard in both directions at once.

Hooo boy we are off to a ROCKY start. Leroy and Vakar are both move interest coded (and Vakar is so obviously in love with Eva I kind of think she's gonna get with the Fridge guy or Glorious Apotheosis instead)

My main takeaway from the Mrs. Loring chapter is that the affair with Mrs. Loring is almost assuredly bullshit, but there WAS probably another woman (allegedly): Judith Verplanck. This is the shit I'm listening to this book for.

Add clandestine peace talks to the list of things this book has.
