Oh my lord this thing is so dense. But we’re into the good stuff. Gone are the days of the Lapita and deducing how early civilizations first traveled. Hello to the Ptolemies, Romans, and Ancient Middle Easterns establishing footholds in their early conquests. It’s insane how many small artifacts, hints of foods, and minor things leftover helped historians glean these major discoveries on travel and trade.

I started this behemoth as a book to force myself back into reading. My god is it dense, and I’m only 20 pages in! So far, some very interesting insight into prehistoric seafarers’ navigation methods.

Starting to notice the differences from book to movie! Some pretty big ones.

Getting crazy…the dinner scene was awesome to read, but I can see why it was cut from the film. The way Herbert integrates thoughts into his characters is so immersive and engaging. Really cool.

Man this moves slowly, but in a good way! There’s so much immersion, lore and inner thoughts that really make me feel ingrained within this world. Great stuff so far!

This book moves very slowly…but man is it all just so captivating. Herbert has a knack for describing the setting quickly and effortlessly. You’re really given the full lay of the land.

These inner monologues are really sweet half the time. The other half they’re insanely goofy. Especially Yueh’s!

Holy dense. Captivating from the first page, it’s insane how much information is packed into every line. I can’t wait to read more.

Oh brother this is gonna take a while. It’s very interesting so far, but man I did not realize this is very much a TRANSLATION of the Greek texts.

Ian Dartley is finished with Caesar: Life of a Colossus
FINISHED!!! This was an incredible read. Goldsworthy really drove home what made Caesar so captivating. He wasn't a ruthless individual like some may think. He was merciful, tactical and likely never imagined himself some longtime-dictator.

This was such a dense read, and at some points I lost track of what made him the character he was. But by the end of the novel everything comes full circle. Truly an all-timer.

Oooooh shit it’s getting crazy. Caesar’s dragging his nuts all across Gaul, making a name for himself back in Italy. Apparently Pompey is getting jealous…

Great opening essay so far. I read this trilogy in a Greek Tragedies course ~ 5 years ago. Always wanted to reread it. So now I am!

Things are getting crazyyyy

Caesar just competed his praetorship in Spain. We got a first look at his military prowess - refusal to be ambushed and the discipline in his men.

So many interesting things taking place, but the nuttiest parts are yet to come!

Gripping so far. The context provided in the beginning - about the state of Rome and the kind of city Caesar grew up in - is not nearly as interesting as the early years of Caesar’s life, but still provides interesting material.
