This wasn’t even close to what I was expecting- it’s actually much better!

My sister likes celebrity memoirs and brought me this one today. Why not? My reading is alllll over the place this year as is.

This is like a lifetime drama if the script was well written and the characters had a little more substance than they normally do. It also takes place during the 1940s so the women are way too man pleasing for my liking. If this wasn’t Atwood writing it, it’d probably be a dud.

“Coal butter” was the waste from German fuel tanks in World War Two, synthesized to make parafan and then mixed with diactyl (which should be the name the of a dinosaur) but is actually the artificial flavoring used in popcorn butter. And then sold as butter. This was the first ultra processed food. Yum breakfast.

Chapter 4 says it’s about “coal butter” wtf- yes I want to know.

I don’t know if I get what this is about. Sort of like punk rock Sex in The City only instead of sex, ghosts and instead of manhattan, Canada. Whatever, I am here for Atwood’s perfect sentence structure.
