“Authority and American Usage” might just be one of the most interesting texts on linguistics i’ve read recently (maybe i don’t read enough). Hopefully it’s not just the recency of it, but it might be my favorite essay of his above his essay on TV. really interesting stuff, this essay had me hooked

love his essay work and this really starts out strong with his write up of attending the 1998 adult video awards. it’s a kind of culture writing i really appreciate and don’t know where to find today

first book down, forgot how much i loved the clever writing

back on track baby i got other books to read (also it’s getting interesting)

liking this when i read it but it’s been taking too long to get interesting LOL. it seems like things might be heating up though…

i think this is the third book i’ve read this year where (one of) the main character(s) is an author and that later plays into how the story is told

book 2 down. still really enjoying this, Murakami is really good at creating somewhat plain characters and making them interesting (case in point with Tengo here) and really does flesh out the world in a way that doesn’t seem as obtuse as it does in some fantasy or other books i’ve read. very excited to see how the rest of this book plays out

book 1 done! enjoying this so far, but it does have a lot of the same criticisms of Murakami’s other work, namely that his writing of women and their actions always feels off and uninformed. i’m really liking the pacing and i think the shifting points of view between chapters really save this long ass book in terms of its pacing LOL. Looking forward to the plot really shaping up in the next section
