this version of the book has illustrations which is awesome and it’s really funny seeing how Roland is just Clint Eastwood from The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

a few essays in his collections focus on grammar and word usage and i think i’m just now far enough removed from school to appreciate learning something new in the English space. lots of really cool things you can do with language!

still learning so much about tennis. DFW really likes using the work preternaturally when describing athletes

first three stories down, i took a bit too long to read Liberation Day so i feel that some of the effect is gone on me but i thought the perspective and themes of consent were potent. the Mom story was well written and (i felt) balanced a nervousness of which mothers are burdened with the neuroticism of someone who’s too paranoid. the letter story was an interesting case of politics and (in)action which is so real.

“Up, Simba”, which recounts DFW’s time as the Rolling Stone writer on the 2000 McCain campaign, was a really interesting read for me to read 25 years late. there’s a lot of discussion about young voter disillusionment which already felt tired for 2000 and feels even more tired today. really enjoyed the analysis and cynicism offered here, while finding some of the vulnerability as a nice change of pace.
