A writer paradoxically seeks the truth and tells lies every step of the way. It's a lie if you make something up. But if you make it up in the name of the truth, then you give your heart to expressing it clearly.

Almost all good writing begins with terrible first efforts. You need to start somewhere. Start by getting something - anything - down on paper.

To love and to cherish, yes. Like a tiger. Like a hurricane. A family. Relentlessly.

If you never share the worst thing you've ever done with a single person, if you just carry it all by yourself, maybe it comes between you and everyone you meet, even if it's years later.

I want it to be always this way, even if he falls in love with me back, and dear God please let him, but even if he does, I don't want to leave anything behind. I want it to be both things at once. True friendship and true love at the very same time.

Love gets worn down, Georgie, like all the most beautiful fabrics. Velvet is a friend for a season, but wool sticks around for a reason.

There was something satisfying about taking raw, messy material, no matter how bland it might be, and giving it shape, rhythm, clarity, a dash of razzle-dazzle...It was something that had always made me happy, putting words on a page in an order that pleased me.

It's just what without wanting to or trying to...I held on to love. Or it held on to me. Not active love; not love, the verb form. It was more just there, a small, unshakeable thing, leftover, useless, as vestigial as wisdom teeth or a tailbone, but still potent enough so that when I heard his voice on the phone, my heart gave a tiny jump of hope that made me want to slap it.

He understood his friendship with Ronan and Adam-they both represented qualities he both lacked and admired, and they liked the versions of him that he also liked. That was true of his friendship with Blue, too, but it was more than that. The better he got to know her, the more it felt like he did when he was swimming. There stopped being dissonant versions of him. There was only Gansey, now, now, now.

"I got suspended." ... "For what?" "Emptying another student's backpack over his car. I don't really want to talk about it." "I do." "Well, I don't. I'm not proud of it." "I'll be proud of you." // Haha Ronan! ❤️

You can't demand love from anyone. Even if I know that's what you want. But you just can't. As much as I hate that cliche: you don't find love. It finds you.

Good decisions mean a wholehearted yes to both the positives and negatives that come with any choice...Every state of life, every decision, includes some pain that must be accepted if you are to enter fully into those decisions, and into new life. There is no perfect decision, perfect outcome, or perfect life. Embracing imperfection helps us relax into reality.

What you produce is not necessarily always sacred, I realized, just because you think it's sacred. What IS sacred is the time that you spend working on the project, and what that time does to expand your imagination, and what that expanded imagination does to transform your life.

Poverty of spirit does not tame away joy in life. Quite the contrary. It is the gateway to joy, because it enables us to surrender to ultimate reliance on God, which leads to freedom.
