The kirpan (thick-edged swords and daggers) was the article of faith that signaled that we would always be prepared to fight for justice. ... This long hair, these tall turbans, were meant to be seen, so that you could spot us in a crowd and know that we would feed you, shelter you, serve you, even fight for you. Because warriors do not hide.

"Sikhs do not hide," Papa Ji would say. We couldn't. These articles were meant to make Sikhs visible, so that we could never hide in a crowd, or hide from the call to fight for justice. At the time, the turban was only worn by royalty in India, but we all had the responsibility to serve, so the turban became our crown.

I don't think I'm enjoying this book, but I don't want to stop listening to it? I'm having a weird relationship with Henderson. He's such a macho guy, but now he's crying in front of a lion. But what he wants to learn from the leader who owns the lion is unclear to me. Maybe I'm more attached to the audiobook narrator's performance. It's a hoot, that's for sure.

Chapter 6 was really helpful -- notes on subject headings in Sears and the LC.

When I was teaching comp to college freshman, we had gender unit. Many essays, both my men & women, revealed that men wanted to spend more time with their children & felt that toxic masculinity had affected their lives negatively. I wonder if this is what has happened to Henderson, & though he wants to help the tribe, he is still self-focused. However, it's a pivot. He's says he's honored & privileged to be there.
